Background
Whether in sports,
academic, military, or corporate environments, organizations are moving towards
a team based approach for problem solving and structure. Teams have long been
identified as the most effective method to achieve organizational goals. Every
team is only as good as the vision and direction of the team leader. In this lesson we will review leadership
attributes that are applicable in any environment. Through exposure to some of the most dynamic
and prolific leaders in recent times, we will define leadership, determine some
key leadership attributes, and then identify good practices for leading teams
in any environment
Lesson Task and Resources
You will be asked to watch 3 videos on leadership. Get a pad and
pencil out and as you watch and listen to the videos, write down the phrases
that resonate and stand out to you. You
will have several exercises based on the video content so pay attention. You will be asked to text, post, email, and
upload various thoughts on leadership. You should be able to watch all the
videos (through the links below) and complete the text and post assignments all
from your phon
Lesson
1.
Leadership
is often thought of in a military context. Colin Powell was not only a combat
infantryman who rose to be the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (the
nation’s top military person), but also became an influential world leader and
shaper as the United States Secretary of State.
Watch this video and as he discusses his thoughts on leadership.
2. Jack
Welch was the Chairman and CEO of General Electric (GE). While he was leading the company, GE became a
dominating global conglomerate. He is
widely known as a leadership guru and his thoughts on identifying and building
leaders are now legendary. Watch as he
discusses leadership.
3.
Phil
Jackson won 11 NBA championships as a head coach and 2 as a player. He has led
and coached some of the greatest players of all time; Michael Jordan, Kobe
Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal all flourished under the leadership of the "Zen
Master". Watch this video and as he
discusses his thoughts on leadership.
Exercise
1. The three videos all
discussed various leadership.styles, techniques, and attributes Some of the
concepts were similar while some of the individual views on leadership were
unique.. Pick one of the phrases below and
post on the class blog which phrase from the leadership videos resonated with
you the most and why.

3. What is your personal definition of
leadership? In your own words define
leadership and email as the body of the message. You can use something you
heard in the videos or if you think it has a different meaning then write it
down. The subject line should be
“Leadership-My Definition”.
4. Taking care of your people was a leadership
trait that was mentioned in the videos.
Why do you think this is important ?
Write a paragraph on this and email as the body of the message. The
subject line should be "Taking Care of your People".
5. From the phrases in question 1, determine
which phrase you would like to incorporate more in your leadership style. Think about your church group, sports team,
or after school job. Is there one phrase
in the list that if your fully embraced could make you more effective as you
lead your team ? Write a paper that
explains why you choose the phrase and how you will apply it in your life. When finished, upload the completed paper (at
least 3 paragraphs) to the class"Blackboard".

Conclusion
The three individuals we have
been studying all are magnificent leaders. All rose through the ranks of their
respective professions to get to the top. They did not start out with the
leadership attributes, skills, and traits they have today. At every step of their journey to the top
they learned, developed, and applied the leadership attributes they were
discussing. Leadership is a journey of
personal growth and it has to begin somewhere. Hopefully, you will apply one of
the leadership phrases we discussed in your personal journey and make your own
brand of leadership.
